Hidden Gems: lesser known casino games to play online

More people than ever before are choosing to play casino games online.

In fact, figures from 2016 reveal over 28 million of us have an account with an online gambling site such as bgo the best online casino. As a result, game developers are constantly innovating new releases - as well as re-creating ancient games from across the globe for today's digital platforms - to stay ahead in the highly-competitive market. This means there's no longer any reason to stick to the same old classics, like blackjack, roulette and poker.

If you're a plucky chancer who fancies trying your luck at something different, here are two hidden casino gems now available to enjoy online.

1. Pai Gow Poker

This game combines the ancient oriental domino game of Pai Gow (pronounced 'pie', think the tasty dessert, 'gow', rhyming with cow) with a staple of Western casino floors you're no doubt already familiar with: poker.

Whilst Pai Gow Poker is still rare in the UK (particularly in land-based casinos), the fun and rewarding pace of play mean it's worldwide popularity is growing rapidly. Tables are popping up all over Las Vegas, and it has built a strong following online in the last few years.

So, 'how's it work?' you ask.

The game is played using a standard 52-card deck with a Joker thrown in. The dealer deals out 7 cards amongst themselves and up to 7 players.

Each player, without speaking to anyone else around the table, then needs to divide their cards into a 5-card and 2-card poker hand. They must do this so that the 2-card hand is lower than their 5-card hand. If you have the Joker, you can use it as a wild card that can substitute for an ace, or help to complete a flush, straight or straight flush.

Once everyone has set up their 2 hands, the dealer picks up their own cards to arrange in the same fashion. As soon as the dealer touches their cards, players are no longer allowed to tamper with their own. All cards are then revealed on the table. The outcome is determined as follows:

  1. If both of a player's hands beat the dealer's, the dealer pays out whatever the player staked.
  2. If only 1 of the player's hands beat the dealer's, no money crosses the table (this is referred to as a 'push').
  3. If both the dealer's hands beat the player's, the dealer wins the player's stake.
Obviously, if you're no stranger to the traditional poker table, Pai Gow Poker will be less of a challenge for you. Nevertheless, it's a relatively easy game for newbies to pick up.

2. Sic Bo

Another game with Eastern origins, Sic Bo (pronounced 'see-bo') has been enjoyed for hundreds of years in China. It now dominates the venues of Macau, an affluent gambling district commonly referred to as the 'Vegas of China'. However, it's only more recently that Sic Bo has been causing a stir with online casino players on this side of the globe.

In terms of the speed and layout, you'll spot a few (albeit vague) similarities between this game and roulette. Players are confronted with a table of numbers on which to place their bets. At first glance, this table can appear confusing (like some sort of horrid chart from a difficult high school maths exam) - but don't be put off. Whether you're a casino veteran or absolute beginner, Sic Bo is a very easy game to wrap your head around.

Essentially, the dealer three dice in a cage and all you need to do is guess the outcome. There are a few different types of bets you can place. Some of the most common types of bet are:
  • The Total: in other words, what the dice add up to. This could be anything from 4 - 17. You can't bet on a total of 3 or 18, as a 'Triple 1' (totalling 3) and a 'Triple 3' (totalling 18) are separate bets.
  • Small: this is called when you predict the total of the dice to fall between 4 - 10.
  • Big: this is called when you predict the total of the dice to fall between 10 - 17.
  • A Specific Double: this is for when you think a specific pair of numbers will appear on 2 of the 3 dice.
  • A Specific Triple: this is when you bet on a specific number to appear on all 3 dice.
It's a great game to try your hand at it you appreciate high-speed thrills, and these are just a few of the many possible bets you can place on the exciting Sic Bo table.
